From 1903 onward, this series of rifle was chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser (8mm Mauser) rimless cartridge, which was also the same cartridge used for ground-based German machine guns such as the MG08, MG34, and MG42. The Mauser 98 Series of rifles were the standard Infantry rifles of the German military from 1898 up through WWII, with the K98k being the last variant fielded.
